MarkLogicCorporation is anAmericansoftware business that develops and provides an enterpriseNoSQLdatabase, also namedMarkLogic. The company was founded in 2001 and is based inSan CarlosCalifornia. MarkLogic is a privately held company with over 500 employees and has offices throughout theUnited StatesEuropeAsia, andAustralia.

MarkLogic has over 550 customers, includingComcastDeutsche BankErie Insurance GroupJohnson & Johnson, and theUS Army.[1]Also, six of the top ten global banks are MarkLogic customers.

According toForrester Research, MarkLogic is one of the nine leading NoSQL databases vendors in the market[2]and appears in severalreports for Operational Database Management Systems.[3]In 2017, Gartner ranked MarkLogic as a Visionary in the Data Warehouse market.[4]

MarkLogic was first named Cerisent and was founded in 2001[5]by Christopher Lindblad,[6]who was the Chief Architect of the Ultraseek search engine atInfoseek, and Paul Pedersen, a professor of computer science atCornell UniversityandUCLA, and Frank R. Caufield,[7]Founder of Darwin Ventures,[8]to address shortcomings with existing search and data products. The product first focused on usingXMLdocument markup standard andXQueryas the query standard for accessing collections of documents up to hundreds of terabytes in size.

In 2009IDCmentioned MarkLogic in a report as one of the topInnovative Information Access Companieswith under $100 million in revenue.[9]

In May 2012, Gary Bloom joined MarkLogic as Chief Executive Officer.[10]He held senior positions atSymantec CorporationVeritas Software, andOracle.[11]

MarkLogic obtained its first financing of $6 million in 2002 lead bySequoia Capital, followed by a $12 million investment in June 2004, this time lead byLehman Brothers Venture Partners.[12]The company received additional funding of $15 million in 2007 from its existing investors Sequoia and Lehman.[12]The same investors put another $12.5 million into the company in 2009.[13]

On 12 April 2013, MarkLogic received an additional $25 million in funding, led bySequoia CapitalandTenaya Capital.[14][15]On May 12, 2015, MarkLogic received an additional $102 million in funding, led byWellington Management Company, with contributions from Arrowpoint Partners and existing backers,Sequoia CapitalTenaya Capital, and Northgate Capital. This brought the companys total funding to $173 Million and gave MarkLogic a pre-money valuation of $1 billion.[16]

NTT Dataannounced a strategic investment in MarkLogic on 31 May 2017.[17]

The MarkLogic product is considered amulti-modelNoSQL database for its ability to store, manage, and searchJSONandXMLdocuments and semantic data (RDF triples).

MarkLogic is available under various licensing and delivery models, namely a freeDeveloperor anEssential Enterpriselicense.[19]Licenses are available from MarkLogic or directly from cloud marketplaces such asAmazon Web ServicesandMicrosoft Azure.

MarkLogic is amulti-modelNoSQL database that has evolved from itsXML databaseroots to also natively storeJSONdocuments andRDF triples, the data model for semantics. MarkLogic uses a distributed architecture that can handle hundreds of billions of documents and hundreds of Terabytes of data. MarkLogic maintainsACIDconsistency for transactions and has aCommon Criteria certificationsecurity model,high availabilityanddisaster recovery. MarkLogic is designed to run on-premises within public or private cloud environments likeAmazon Web Services.[20]

MarkLogics Enterprise NoSQL database platform is widely used in publishing, government, finance and other sectors, with hundreds of large-scale systems in production.[20]

Increasing pressure for consumer protection in investment services such asMiFIDlaws required banks to process and analyze a large volume and variety of data for reporting requirements. ABN AMRO selected MarkLogic to bring unstructured and structured trade data into one central operational trade data store, and keeps records of every order and trade event.[21][22]

In 2012, MarkLogic was selected by theBritish Broadcasting Corporationto power its Olympic Data Services of the 2012London Olympics.[23]Following the success of the London Olympics data services, BBC moved its popular iPlayer video on-demand services from its legacy relational database system onto MarkLogic.[24]

Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services(CMS)

Since 1 October 2013, MarkLogic has been used to help power the U.S. governments site, launched to support thePatient Protection and Affordable Care Act(ACA). The site had trouble at launch, and according to theNew York Times,the main contractor for ACA originally objected to using MarkLogic.[25][26]

In February 2015,NBClaunched a mobile app for its iconicSaturday Night Liveshow, and as of September 2015, the app had been used to stream over 100 Million clips. MarkLogic is the database used for storing and searching metadata, and the app also has a predictive engine connected to the database that keeps users engaged with the content.[27]
