GSS monitoring solutions are the ideal answer to the monitoring requirements of all types of civil engineering projects: dams, pipelines, canals, railways, highways, ports, airports, tunnels, bridges and buildings, among others.

In order to avoid disasters, very strict safety and maintenance standards are now required by governments, not only in construction phases, but also throughout the life-cycle of civil infrastructures. Our monitoring solutions address these needs and further reduce maintenance and operational costs.

Linear infrastructures pose a great challenge to wireless monitoring systems. The duration of most projects and lack of redundancy over a certain area require robust monitoring solutions that dont rely on a single, critical path. Specific monitoring systems need to cover the entire infrastructure without critical points, specifically along railways, highways, pipelines, embankments, tunnels, and bridges. We provides just this type of linear monitoring by means of its long-range radio, which ensures direct coverage of all points throughout the infrastructure without repeaters.

Structural health monitoring is emerging as a necessary tool for helping engineers improve the safety and maintainability of critical structures. SHM concentrates more and more on designing intelligent infrastructures. This means having smart, real-time control of the structure to control multiple parameters, such as: vibration, inclination, differential settlement, etc. The goal is to implement real-time data for health assessment in order to prevent collapses or other structural damage. GSS solutions combine many different sensing applications that provide complete solutions from beginning to end.

Geotechnical monitoring is essential for the successful completion of most civil engineering projects, both in the construction phase as well as during operational life-cycle performance. Geotechnical monitoring is the first and most critical step in projects such as slopes, excavations near sensitive structures, land reclamation sites, retaining walls, embankments, foundations, and many others. GSS solutions deliver real-time site information to our customers in order to facilitate decision-making, and improve overall project performance in terms of both safety and productivity.

Dam monitoring is especially critical, because it encompasses a dams various structural parameters (strain, load, vibration, cracks and tilt) as well as those of the surrounding areas (water pressure, flow, turbidity, soil movement and settlement).  What is more, dams are often located in harsh and remote environments, which require the most flexible monitoring systems in order to adapt to changing conditions. GSS solutions meet these requirements while always keeping in mind the need for user-friendly installations and remote real-time access.

24/7 assessment of infrastructure health status to ensure safety and minimize costs.

Our client was awarded a contract to build a tunnel that would connect Hong Kong to China. For tunnel lining, the client planned to use steel fiber frames to reinforce concrete segments instead of the conventional rebar frames, which would significantly reduce costs. They developed a numerical model to assess the segment structural behavior, and were looking for a solution to obtain actual data for comparison. The comparison between the numerical and experimental results would be used to assess the effectiveness of the adopted numerical model in predicting the behavior of segmental lining under a thrust simulating the effect of the tunnel boring machine (TBM) during excavation. GSS was engaged to develop the instrumentation solution to provide strain results for concrete segments cast using both conventional rebar and steel fiber frames.

Limited Access: The data logging must be completely self-contained within each segment and allow wireless transmission of the data

Low Power Consumption: Must function for 3 months minimum, and plan to collect readings for up to 16 months. Vibrating wire strain gauges embedded in pre-cast concrete lining are not suitable

No Trailing Wires: The solution must function completely encased in concrete. External wires can be easily damaged and would also interfere with the vacuum pads used during erection

Hostile Environment: The concrete curing temperature was expected to reach 70⁰C.

Limit Internal Cables: The number and size of cables to be limited due to concerns the cables could affect the structural behavior of the segments.

GSS identified strain gauges specially designed to be embedded in concrete. As there is no solution in market, GSS designed and built devices specifically to meet the project requirements. In addition to providing accurate strain readings, the following challenges needed to be addressed when developing the solution: Limited Access Self-contained battery powered DLM with PC application for wireless management Lower Power Consuption 2 x C Cell batteries in the DLM powered all 7 SGMs and 21 strain gauges No Trailing Wires All SGMs and cables were embedded in concrete Hostile Environment All embedded components used were rated to operate between -10⁰ and +85⁰C Limited Internal Cables RJ11 cables with protective cover used to daisy chain SGMS to provide redundancy and reduce cable requirements. The project completed successfully and the client was happy with the results, and are in the process of developing a whitepaper to share their success with the industry. The ability to measure actual strain on concrete is important to the c
ivil engineering industry and in particular tunneling. It can have safety and commercial benefits. Our client saved US$ millions in reduced steel rebar requirements.

One of the biggest problems lies in obtaining information on how floods spread and evolve in relation to potentially affected catchments. Monitoring flow depth, water discharge and other parameters is a valuable tool for prevention and protection against floods. The long-range communication capabilities of GSSss products are the perfect solution for stations stretched out along rivers or stations spread further inland across catchments. In order to monitor so many data points in the mine teams must travel regularly to take manual readings. This is an intensive and difficult process, as many instruments are remotely located. The proof-of-concept (PoC) was conducted by GSS on elevator doors to detect 3D orientation motion including:

Acceleration/Deceleration (door open and close speed)

Displacement (door movement: in/out/up/down, change in floors)

Tilt (tilt was seen as door started to open and close)

Gyro Rate (including door shimmying)

Twisting (potentially related to loose door shoes)

Our sensors have intelligence to assess door profile deviations, compare deviations against user defined thresholds, and take desired action. User defined thresholds can be customized for each door and desired actions based on internal sensor functionality and communications (i.e. log profile, send alert).

To illustrate the point, the green lines in the diagram represent the normal door profile and the other colors represent a deviation that is related to a service event that our sensor can distinguish and report.
